The History:
Reflexology is a complimentary, energy based therapy that works primarily on the feet to heal the whole person. Reflexology dates back to ancient Egypt, China and India. In the West, Dr William Fitzgeald first introduced it in 1913 as 'Zone Therapy'. His theory was based on there being 10 vertical energy zones flowing through the body. He found a link between reflex areas of the feet and hands with other areas and organs on the body that were in the same zone. In 1930, eunice Inham developed the zone technique further into Reflexology. She produced foot maps that related to specific organs and systems of the body. Therefore stimulating a reflex on the foot may affect the corresponding body area. Reflexology still adopts this approach today. It's actions are similar to accupressure and uses the meridians within the body to affect its sytems. Reflexology DOES NOT claim to diagnose or cure.
How Does Reflexology Work?
Reflexology works by re-balancing the bodily systems by enabling them to work in harmony on both an emotional and physical level. there are over 7,000 nerve endings on the feet that connect with the rest of the body, in addition to the many reflex points. By manipulating reflex points the following may occur;
Stimulation of the Circulatory and Immune sytemsStimulation of the Nervous and Endocrine SystemsDeep Relaxation and Pain ReliefIncrease in Energy Levels
What to expect from a Reflexology Treatment?
A full consultation will be taken prior to a treatment. Objectives and expectations of the treatment are discussed in order to tailor the treatments to your individual requirements. Whether it be for a 30 or 60 minute session, you will either be sitting up on a couch or if mobility is a problem, then you can be sitting in a reclining chair, you will be fully clothed with your feet slighty elevated. Only the feet and lower leg are exposed during the treatment (the same applies, with only the hand and the lower arm if Hand Reflexology is chosen). the feet are warmed and loosened up using massage techniques and then sequences of reflexes are stimulated on diiferent parts of the feet (or hands). The treatment is neither painful nor ticklish although sometimes certain ares may feel a little tender. This often relates to an imbalance within the corresponding area of the body.
Who Can Benefit?
Reflexology is suitable for all ages of people from babies to pensioners with a wide range of conditons. Each client will be treated on an individual basis and you must inform me of any conditions that you suffer from plus any medication you are taking during your consultation before treatment can be carried out.
